Welcome To The Stunt World

At Sickandmad.com we have an appetite for adrenaline and dangerous stuff, if they can be highly entertaining, even more so. That is why this article will deal with stunts in general, from definitions, to clear examples and everything in between. We will also talk about some of the most interesting dirt bike stunts, and motorcycle stunts in the planet. In terms of the definition of a stunt, we can say that it is a physical feat that is both difficult to perform and not usual, that requires special abilities. A stunt has an artistic purpose, and can be seen in cinema, theater and TV performances. Action packed movies owe their popularity to high risk stunts that provide that sense of danger that these movies should be all about. Being a stunt double is a quite dangerous profession, many accidents and even deaths are reported every year. In fact, before the computer made special effects existed, film makers used camera tricks and models rather than people to cause those effects. Here is where stunt doubles or stunt performers became popular, as they were willing to take on the most dangerous scenes of the movies to bring that dose of reality and danger to the screen, sometimes even at the cost of their own lives.

Stage combat is the most common kind of stunt action used in movies, in order for these combats to be more real, actual contact goes on in most of these stunts. These stunts are not spontaneous, they are thoroughly rehearsed for hours or days depending on their level of complexity. These fights that we like to see in our favorite action or martial arts movies are artistic, but they have they share of reality, as in many cases contact does happen. In some of the movies starred by Bruce Lee, for example, stunt doubles ended up with black eyes and even an occasional broken arm. In one of his movies, staff reported that after a stunt hit Bruce Lee harder than he was supposed to, in the next scene Bruce Lee decided to get even and kicked the stunt so hard that he went flying into four more stunts who were all injured.

In terms of stunts, beside physical stunts such as the ones that we mentioned before, there is also what we know a vehicular stunts. Including cars, planes, helicopters, buses, trucks that are usually adapted for the required stunt. Vehicular stunts can be as complex as to involve dozens of vehicles, crashes, jumps and intricate chases ending up in explosions. An expert in this area is Remy Julienne who is known as a pioneer in the automotive stunt coordinator and performer. Ian Walton is also a pioneer in terms of helicopter stunts who was really popular. In this category bike stunts and motorcycle stunts are also included. Some of these stunts have become sports/shows such as the X-Knights in which all kinds of sick and mad stunts are showcased in front of thousands of people.
